My New Radio Show: The Expedition

September 16, 2015 at 2:09 pm

The Expedition on Dash Radio

I am producing and hosting a brand new radio show on the Dash Radio Network.  “The Expedition – A Journey Into Sound with Frank Foreal” is all about uncovering music, new and old, from all over the world. New bands, producers, DJ’s, as well as vintage finds. I’m very excited to be producing this show alongside fellow music junkies, Derrick Ah Sam and Michelle Choug, who I’ve spent many hours (and years) with talking about music that we love.  The Expedition airs every Friday at 5pm PT /8pm ET, with a re-broadcast every Saturday at 7pm PT / 10pm ET.

You can listen to our recent archives via our new Mixcloud page, and make plans to tune in this week.  We could also use your support via all social media networks: find us on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter @EXPEDITIONRADIO.  If you enjoy what you hear, please like and share!

That being said, this is a bittersweet moment, as I will be stepping away from my duties on Soundwaves Radio, a great program that I have had the honor to work on the past 20 months. Without Sean Osborn‘s generosity, bringing me on the airwaves with him, Val The Vandle, and Francesca Harding, I could not have earned the confidence and experience to lead me to this point. I am so grateful to you all!

I had a great conversation with Oakland’s DJ Platurn a few weeks back, after he made a visit to LA for Boombox’s Native Tongue Appreciation night.  I scooped up his new mix CD, “So This is De La Heaven, PT2,” which is an amazing De La Soul tribute, and we talked in depth about this project (which took him over a year to make).  Listen and enjoy!

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope you had a great holiday, filled with friends, family, and good music.  2014 is off to a great start.  Just before Christmas, I was sitting at Aloha Kitchen, one of my favorite breakfast spots in Little Tokyo DTLA, with my wife.  We had been going back and forth  the past week or so about what my plans are for radio, how I’m going to make my dreams happen, and why I’m not there yet.  During breakfast we were having a similar conversation, when I received a phone call from SeanO, whose radio show on KPFK I had recently dropped a guest DJ set on.  Normally I would never interrupt a meal with my wife, but something made me pick up that phone.  I’m glad I did, because Sean was calling to invite me to join the team for his weekly show, Soundwaves Radio.  You can now hear me on LA airwaves late every Friday night, from 2-4am, on 90.7FM KPFK.  Truly the law of attraction in full effect right there, y’all, and I can’t thank my wife enough for helping me put that energy out there, and to SeanO for making that phone call.  I’m grateful for this opportunity, and invite you to take this journey with me.  Head to Facebook and LIKE our page to stay in the know about upcoming guests and DJ’s, and past show archives.

Late Friday/Early Saturdays
Soundwaves Radio @ KPFK 90.7FM
-2am-4am
-Los Angeles airwaves on 90.7FM, worldwide on kpfk.org, and through smartphones via the Pacifica Radio app.
-Hip Hop, Funk, World Music, Soul, Jazz, and Electronic goodness, brought to you by SeanO, Frank Foreal, DJ Gro Weyez, DJ Panamami, and Val The Vandal plus guest dj sets and interviews from the world’s finest music curators.

Gilles Peterson’s new website = continued inspiration

December 6, 2012 at 11:01 am

Gilles Peterson will always be an inspiration and motivator for my passion for radio.  Dude is cream of the crop in the independent radio world to me.  Pushing out consistent content for 20+ years is not an easy task, and yet Gilles makes it look easy, with radio programs, dj mixes, dj gigs, an international festival, and even his own awards ceremony, celebrating good music from across the globe.  He is truly a remarkable brand, and human being.

I got an email from the Gilles Peterson Worldwide email list today about their revamped website, and they posted a picture of the new Brownswood FM radio studios, located in the basement of Brownswood Records.  This is what I need to be doing!  This setup looks amazing, even in its minimal nature (no posters on the walls?!).  I'm now inspired to get my studio to this level.
